Michigan Lawmakers File Complaint Against Tom Barrett

Black lawmakers in Michigan have filed a complaint against Republican congressional candidate Tom Barrett for placing an advertisement in a Black-owned newspaper that incorrectly listed Election Day as November 6, a day after the actual election date of November 5. The complaint, filed by Democratic state Senators Erika Geiss and Sarah Anthony on behalf of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, suggests that this could be a violation of state election laws designed to prevent voter misinformation. Barrett's campaign acknowledged the mistake, attributing it to a 'proofing error,' but the lawmakers argue that it could intentionally mislead Black voters. They express concern that this ad could be part of a broader strategy to deter Black voter turnout, noting that Barrett's other advertisements correctly stated the election date. The Ingham County prosecutor has confirmed receipt of the complaint and will investigate further. Barrett is in a competitive race against Democrat Curtis Hertel for Michigan's 7th Congressional District seat, currently held by Representative Elissa Slotkin.
