Sony Plans $50 PS5 Price Increase US August 21
Sony is set to raise the prices of all PlayStation 5 models in the U.S. by $50 starting August 21, with the PS5 Digital Edition increasing to $499.99, the standard PS5 to $549.99, and the PS5 Pro to $749.99. This price hike follows similar increases by Nintendo on Switch models and Microsoft's earlier Xbox Series price adjustments, reflecting ongoing economic challenges and tariffs. Consumers still have a last chance to purchase PS5 consoles at current prices today from major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart, although some models, like the disc-based PS5 at Amazon, are already sold out. The PS5 Pro offers enhanced features such as a better GPU, faster memory, improved ray tracing, Wi-Fi 7 support, AI upscaling, and 2TB internal storage but lacks an internal disc drive, similar to the Digital Edition which requires an external drive to play physical media. Special promotional bundles like the PS5 Slim Digital Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 edition provide additional value and may remain at current prices, but stock is limited and unlikely to last through the price increase. Sony's Vice President of Global Marketing cited a challenging economic environment as the reason for the price adjustment, though accessory prices remain unaffected for now.
