EU Unveils €10.6 Billion Satellite Network IRIS²
The European Union has initiated plans to create a €10.6 billion ($11.1 billion) satellite network named Iris² to compete with Elon Musk's Starlink, aiming to provide high-speed internet to remote areas and enhance Europe's technological sovereignty. The Iris² project will deploy a constellation of 290 satellites by 2030, designed for both governmental and private use, and is a response to rising concerns over reliance on foreign satellite technology and cyber security threats, particularly after the invasion of Ukraine. Major European companies such as Eutelsat, Hispasat, and SES are involved in the project, which aims to strengthen secure communications across Europe. The EU will invest approximately €6 billion, with additional funding from the consortium and the European Space Agency. While the project has been praised as a significant step towards autonomy, it has faced criticism regarding its high costs. Musk's Starlink currently operates around 7,000 satellites and has become crucial for military communications in Ukraine, intensifying the competition between the two satellite networks.
