Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern Rules Out Fianna Fáil Presidential Bid

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has officially ruled himself out of the 2025 Presidential election, acknowledging that he lacks the support of current Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Fianna Fáil leadership, who favor former Dublin GAA manager Jim Gavin for the party nomination. Ahern expressed respect for Fianna Fáil and dismissed the idea of running as an independent candidate. He attributed Martin's opposition to his candidacy to issues related to the Mahon Tribunal and the 2008 economic crash, defending his record on economic growth during his tenure. Ahern emphasized his loyalty to Fianna Fáil and reflected on his political career, including his role in economic development and the Good Friday Agreement. With Ahern stepping aside, the contest for Fianna Fáil’s nomination is expected to be between Jim Gavin, who has significant party backing including from Martin, and Cork MEP Billy Kelleher. The party's nomination process will conclude with a secret ballot among parliamentary members.
