UK Army Faces Readiness and Investment Challenges

Veterans Minister Alistair Carns has warned that the British Army could be depleted within six months to a year in a major war scenario similar to the conflict in Ukraine, due to high casualty rates. He emphasized the critical role of the reserves in generating rapid depth and mass in times of crisis, noting that without them, the UK cannot meet its defense tasks. Carns pointed out the stark reality of attritional warfare, with Russian forces in Ukraine suffering approximately 1,500 casualties daily, underscoring the need for the UK to catch up with NATO allies in reserve force emphasis. Despite the Army's shrinking size, Carns argued against enlarging the full-time army, instead advocating for stronger reserve forces to enhance military capability.
