Oklo Nears DoD Contract for Alaska Air Force Nuclear Power

Oklo Inc., an advanced nuclear technology company, has received a Notice of Intent to Award from the Defense Logistics Agency Energy to deploy its Aurora microreactor powerhouse at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. This project is part of the Department of the Air Force's microreactor pilot program aimed at enhancing energy resilience and providing clean, reliable electricity and heat to critical national security infrastructure through a long-term power purchase agreement. Oklo will design, construct, own, and operate the power plant, which uses fast reactor technology to operate independently from the grid, ideal for remote military installations. Despite past regulatory challenges, including a denied operating license by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2022, Oklo plans to reapply for a license following President Trump's recent executive orders directing faster NRC licensing processes. The project aligns with increased military interest in micro nuclear reactors as a sustainable energy solution, although it faces risks related to regulatory approval, financing, and supply chain issues. Oklo’s stock has surged significantly, reflecting investor confidence in its potential to lead in the microreactor market for defense applications.
