Trump and Xi Agree Limited One-Year Trade Truce
President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping held talks in South Korea during Xi’s APEC visit in Gyeongju and agreed a limited, uneasy truce that includes roughly a one-year pause on selected tariffs, export controls and maritime/port fees rather than the specific tariff cuts earlier reported. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung also met Xi and urged China to help Seoul resume dialogue with North Korea as he balanced ties with Washington after hosting Trump days earlier. Markets and shipping groups welcomed the reprieve, but analysts warned the one-year suspension leaves significant uncertainty. U.S. lawmakers and courts have mounted symbolic and legal challenges to the tariff arrangements. North Korea did not respond to overtures, continued missile activity, and publicly dismissed denuclearization, limiting prospects for immediate progress.
