Europe Drafts Freeze Plan, Sweden Urges War Mode
European leaders, working with Ukraine, are reportedly drafting a 12-point plan to freeze the war along current front lines that would be overseen by a peace board reportedly chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump and pair a ceasefire with security guarantees, reconstruction funds and a pathway to EU membership while rejecting Kremlin demands that Kyiv cede territory. When Russian drones swerved into Polish airspace last month, Warsaw opened an investigation amid a concurrent disinformation campaign, highlighting intensifying hybrid threats including airspace incursions, drone incidents and GPS interference. Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson urged Europeans to “switch to war mode,” calling for mental and military preparation, accelerated defense spending and rapid acquisitions, including U.S. systems, to better deter Russia. Officials warned provocations must be met with robust responses, up to and including shooting down violators if necessary. Jonson also stressed strong domestic support in Sweden for increased defense spending and continued or expanded military aid to Ukraine, and said Sweden plans to supply radar reconnaissance and early-warning aircraft and eventually fighter jets while participating in multinational defense initiatives. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said it is wrong to pressure Ukraine to give up land, responding to reports that President Trump urged Kyiv to surrender territory.
