North Carolina Gov. Stein Vetoes Republican DEI, Gender Bills
North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein, a Democrat, has vetoed four Republican-sponsored bills aimed at eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives across public schools, higher education, and state and local governments, as well as a bill restricting transgender rights by recognizing only two sexes and limiting transgender healthcare access. Stein criticized the Republican-controlled legislature for prioritizing these culture war issues over passing a state budget and addressing pressing public service needs, calling the bills "mean-spirited" and marginalizing vulnerable populations. Republicans, who hold a narrow majority, have expressed strong opposition to the vetoes, framing the legislation as protecting women, children, and parental rights, and have vowed to attempt veto overrides despite challenges in securing enough votes. The legislation aligns with President Donald Trump's agenda to dismantle DEI efforts and restrict transgender rights. The U.S. Supreme Court has recently supported states banning gender-affirming care for minors and is set to hear related cases concerning women’s sports. Legislative leaders continue to debate special sessions and override timing, with the governor standing firm on his vetoes while signaling willingness to collaborate on serious issues.
