Iranian Plot Against Cotler Sparks Calls for Action

Canadian authorities thwarted an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate former Minister of Justice Irwin Cotler, who has been a vocal critic of the Iranian regime and an advocate for listing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) informed Cotler on October 26 of an imminent assassination threat from Iranian agents, prompting heightened security measures including bulletproof vehicles and armed protection. The threat level was reported to have decreased by November 14. This incident followed the Canadian government's official designation of the IRGC as a terrorist entity in June. Cotler, a human rights lawyer and former Liberal MP, has been a target due to his staunch defense of Israel and condemnation of groups like Hamas, supported by Iran. The situation has sparked calls from Canadian MPs for increased measures against the Iranian regime.
