SEC, CFTC Coordinate to Clear Spot Crypto Trading on US Exchanges

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) have jointly announced a coordinated effort to enable and oversee spot cryptocurrency trading on registered U.S. exchanges. This initiative clarifies that current laws do not prohibit SEC- or CFTC-registered platforms, including national securities exchanges, designated contract markets, and foreign boards of trade, from listing spot crypto products, even those with leverage and margin features, provided they meet regulatory standards. The move, aligned with President Trump's advocacy for the crypto industry and recommendations from the President’s Working Group on Digital Asset Markets, aims to foster regulatory clarity, investor protections, and market transparency while positioning the U.S. as a global leader in digital asset markets. Both agencies are prepared to review exchange filings and engage with market participants to ensure proper compliance with requirements such as clearing, settlement, trade data dissemination, and market surveillance. This development marks a significant shift from previous enforcement-focused policies to a more collaborative regulatory approach, encouraging major traditional exchanges like NYSE and Nasdaq to consider offering spot crypto trading.
