Florida Troopers Authorized Independent Immigration Arrests Nationwide Impact
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has significantly expanded the state's immigration enforcement powers by authorizing Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers to independently conduct immigration operations without federal involvement. Over 1,800 FHP troopers have been federally credentialed under the ICE 287(g) program, allowing them to arrest, detain, and process undocumented immigrants, execute federal immigration warrants, and operate as special deputy U.S. marshals. This move makes Florida the first state to empower its state law enforcement officers to handle nearly all stages of the immigration process up to deportation, including participation in large-scale operations like Operation Tidal Wave, which targeted over 1,100 immigrants, many with criminal records. DeSantis emphasized that the state is prepared to manage immigration enforcement logistics similarly to hurricane response efforts and encouraged other states to adopt similar measures supporting President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda. However, some local legal experts have expressed concern that the FHP’s expanded role could strain resources and impact their traditional law enforcement duties. Florida’s approach marks a notable shift toward state-led immigration enforcement independent of federal agencies.
