Türkiye Signs 20-Year LNG Deal with Mercuria

News summary

Türkiye's state energy company BOTAŞ signed a 20-year LNG supply deal with Mercuria to receive about 4 billion cubic metres per year from 2026, totaling roughly 70 bcm, Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said. U.S.-sourced cargoes can be loaded at U.S. liquefaction terminals and delivered to regasification facilities in Türkiye, Europe and North Africa, part of Ankara's push to diversify gas supplies and strengthen medium-term portfolio predictability. Officials said the pact will help advance a $100 billion trade-volume target with the United States and was announced as ties with Washington warmed after Ankara lifted retaliatory tariffs ahead of President Erdoğan's scheduled White House meeting. Separately, BOTAŞ reached a heads-of-agreement with Australia's Woodside for about 5.8 bcm over nine years starting in 2030, mainly from Woodside's Louisiana LNG project, which is slated to begin deliveries in 2029. Turkish officials said these and other recent contracts—securing roughly 15 bcm for 2026–28—aim to build a flexible, multi-sourced energy structure and bolster BOTAŞ's position in global LNG markets.
