US Senate Begins Review of Trump's $3.8T Tax and Immigration Bill
The U.S. Senate has returned to Washington to begin reviewing President Donald Trump's extensive tax and immigration bill, known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill," which aims to extend income tax cuts, introduce new tax breaks, overhaul Medicaid and food stamps, and allocate funds for Trump's deportation plan. While Republicans are pushing to pass the bill by July 4, several GOP senators, including deficit hawks and Medicaid-focused moderates like Sens. Ron Johnson, Rick Scott, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Susan Collins, and Josh Hawley, have expressed concerns about the bill's impact on the national debt and potential changes to Medicaid funding. Senate Democrats warn that efforts by Senate Majority Leader John Thune to bypass the parliamentarian and make the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent could undermine Senate rules and the filibuster. The Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham's decision on whether to consider extending the tax cuts as budget neutral will be critical in determining the bill's final shape. President Trump is actively rallying support for the legislation and is scheduled to meet with Vice President JD Vance as part of the effort. Meanwhile, the Philippine Senate also resumed sessions on June 2 to begin deliberations on its legislative priorities, but this is unrelated to the U.S. legislative developments.
