US Formalizes Security Guarantees with Ukraine Amid Russia Tensions
European and regional leaders emphasize the critical importance of security and stability in Ukraine and Syria for broader regional and international peace. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted Syria’s stability as essential for Europe’s security, calling for international support for Syria's government and urging pressure on Israel to halt its attacks on Syrian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other Western officials have formalized key security guarantees for Ukraine, underscoring the importance of foreign troop presence as a sign of political support amid ongoing Russian aggression, including drone attacks on Poland. Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis stressed that Ukraine’s security is vital for the new world order and warned that the West must face the reality of ongoing conflict and provide real security guarantees, acknowledging that Ukraine currently pays a heavy price for European peace. Finnish President Alexander Stubb asserted that Ukraine’s EU membership represents the strongest security guarantee and a strategic defeat for Russia, emphasizing the need for a robust Ukrainian military supported by European and U.S. assistance. Collectively, these views reflect a consensus on the necessity of sustained international commitment to Ukraine and Syria to ensure regional stability and counter Russian and other destabilizing actions.
