Senior Chinese Trade Negotiator Li Chenggang Heads to US for Tariff Talks
Senior Chinese trade negotiator Li Chenggang is visiting Washington this week for the first round of trade talks under the current tariff truce between China and the United States. Li, a top aide to Beijing's lead negotiator He Lifeng, is scheduled to meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Treasury officials, and representatives from the American business community. Key topics expected to be discussed include China's demand for the U.S. to relax technology export restrictions, increased purchases of American soybeans, and the possible removal of fentanyl-related tariffs on soybeans and Boeing jets. These talks follow previous negotiations held since May in Geneva, London, and Stockholm and come amid a 90-day extension of the tariff truce aimed at avoiding a trade embargo and stabilizing trade flows. Both sides are working to establish a regular communication channel to manage trade tensions and ease restrictions, including discussions on rare earth exports and U.S. technology products. The Chinese commerce ministry and the White House have not yet commented on the talks.
