Trump Deportation Plans Could Cost 6 Million Jobs Nationwide Report Finds
President Donald Trump's plan to deport 4 million immigrants over four years could lead to nearly six million job losses nationwide, affecting both immigrant and U.S.-born workers, according to an Economic Policy Institute (EPI) analysis. Key states such as California, Florida, New York, Texas, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania would experience the highest job losses due to their large immigrant populations. The construction industry is expected to face the steepest decline, with an estimated loss of over two million jobs combined for U.S.-born and immigrant workers, while the child care sector could lose half a million jobs. The report highlights that immigrant and U.S.-born jobs are economically linked, so reductions in immigrant labor supply also decrease demand for jobs held by U.S.-born workers, and immigrant workers' reduced spending will impact local economies. The Trump administration has allocated $170 billion for immigration enforcement and border protection, making Immigration and Customs Enforcement the highest-funded law enforcement agency through 2029. The EPI warns that such deportations could cause sharp labor supply drops leading some employers to shut down operations entirely, squandering recent employment gains and inflicting widespread economic pain.
