FBI Investigates 3 Children’s Hospitals Over Pediatric Sex-Change Surgeries

The FBI is conducting criminal investigations into three major children's hospitals—Boston Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital Colorado, and Children's Hospital Los Angeles—for allegedly violating federal laws against female genital mutilation (FGM) by performing pediatric sex-change surgeries and administering hormone treatments to minors. This probe follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump prioritizing the cessation of irreversible medical interventions for children with gender dysphoria, and an April memo from Attorney General Pam Bondi directing federal prosecutors to pursue cases under the FGM statute, which carries up to a decade in prison per count. Bondi also established a Coalition Against Child Mutilation to coordinate with state attorneys general in building legal cases against healthcare providers accused of such practices. The investigations include scrutiny over potential False Claims Act violations related to Medicaid billing for transgender procedures. The medical advocacy group Do No Harm has supported these federal actions, emphasizing that children’s hospitals should provide evidence-based care rather than gender-affirming treatments that can cause irreversible harm. One of the hospitals, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, recently shut down its pediatric gender clinic citing legal and financial risks amid the shifting regulatory landscape.
