Trans Student Sues Kansas University Over Firing

Anthony Alvarez, a transgender student and former proctor at the University of Kansas, has filed a federal lawsuit against the university alleging wrongful termination and violation of his First Amendment rights. Alvarez claims he was fired for participating in a media interview about the university's elimination of gender-inclusive housing and bathrooms at Grace Pearson Scholarship Hall, which led to campus protests. According to Alvarez, the university placed him on probation for allegedly violating a media policy requiring employees to direct press inquiries to supervisors, and fired him the next day despite indicating he could appeal. Alvarez contends he spoke as an affected student rather than as a university representative, and his attorney argues the policy is unconstitutional. University officials have not commented on the lawsuit. The case underscores ongoing tensions over LGBTQ+ rights and free speech on college campuses.
