Beginning in January 2025, over 3 million Americans with Medicare will benefit from a $2,000 cap on out-of-pocket prescription drug costs, as part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). AARP reports that this change will save many seniors, with an estimated 1.4 million individuals saving over $1,000 annually, and more than 420,000 saving over $3,000. U.S. Senator Bob Casey emphasized the importance of this legislation, stating it will alleviate the financial burden of prescription drugs, which has forced many seniors to skip doses. The cap follows the introduction of a $35 monthly limit on insulin costs for Medicare recipients and allows Medicare to negotiate prices for certain high-cost medications starting in 2026. As a result, the number of seniors benefiting from these caps is expected to grow to over 4 million by the end of the decade. This reform has been lauded as a significant step toward making medications more affordable for millions of Americans.
