NYC Democrats Pick Socialist Zohran Mamdani for Mayoral Primary Victory
Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Muslim democratic socialist and New York state assemblyman, won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani, who has gained strong support from progressives including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, advocates for policies such as taxing the wealthy, free public buses, rent freezes, and city-owned grocery stores, positioning himself as a fierce opponent of President Trump. Cuomo, who faced sexual harassment allegations and controversy over his pandemic response, conceded the primary but has not ruled out an independent run in the general election. Mamdani’s platform also includes controversial education reforms, such as abolishing the Specialized High Schools Admission Test (SHSAT), which has sparked debate over merit and racial equity in NYC schools. His wife, Rama Duwaji, a Syrian illustrator known for her pro-Palestine artwork, has recently gained public attention amid right-wing criticism. The mayoral race highlights a generational and ideological divide within the Democratic Party, between the centrist Cuomo and the younger, left-leaning Mamdani.
