Meta to Ban EU Political Ads Over New Rules
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, will halt all political, electoral, and social issue advertising in the European Union starting in October 2025 due to the new Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation. The TTPA, effective October 10, 2025, requires labeling of political ads, disclosure of funding sources, and maintenance of public ad archives to combat disinformation and foreign interference. Meta argues that the regulation's legal and operational complexity makes compliance untenable, and warns the ban may harm advertisers and European voters by limiting access to information and reducing outreach effectiveness. Paid political promotion will end, but organic political content will remain allowed. Google has also implemented a similar ban in response to the new rules. Critics caution that although the regulations aim to increase transparency, they may stifle free expression and reduce the diversity of information available to EU voters.
