The European Commission has fined Meta Platforms €797.72 million ($841 million) for breaching EU antitrust rules by linking its Facebook social network with the classified ads service, Facebook Marketplace. This integration automatically exposes all Facebook users to Marketplace, granting it a competitive advantage that other classified service providers cannot match. The Commission also accused Meta of imposing unfair trading conditions on other ad service providers by using their data to benefit Marketplace. Meta plans to appeal the decision, arguing that it ignores the realities of the European market and fails to demonstrate actual harm to competitors or consumers. This fine is part of ongoing regulatory scrutiny of Big Tech in Europe, where the Commission has launched numerous antitrust actions in recent years. Meta previously faced a €1.3 billion fine for data privacy violations related to transferring EU citizens' data to the US.
