Portugal Plans Increased LNG Imports from US, Nigeria, Reduces Russian Dependence

Portugal is planning to significantly increase its imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Nigeria and the United States while reducing its reliance on Russian gas, according to Environment Minister Maria da Graca Carvalho. In 2024, Portugal imported 49,141 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of natural gas, with approximately 96% being LNG; Nigeria accounted for 51% of these imports, and the U.S. supplied 40%, while Russian gas dropped to around 4.4% from 15% in 2021. Carvalho emphasized the need for greater EU cooperation to enhance energy security, as Portugal's geographical isolation has earned it the status of an 'energy island.' The shift in energy sourcing follows sanctions on Russian oil and gas imports implemented after the invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, U.S. President Donald Trump previously warned the EU about potential tariffs if energy imports from the U.S. were not increased. The overarching goal is to ensure stable energy supplies as Europe navigates its changing energy landscape.
