Seattle Police Exit 13-Year Federal Consent Decree After Reforms
After 13 years of federal oversight prompted by findings of excessive force and racial bias, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) has officially exited a consent decree following a ruling by U.S. District Judge James Robart. The decree, initiated in 2012 after a Department of Justice investigation, required SPD to implement extensive reforms including new use-of-force policies, body camera usage, and improved accountability measures. The Justice Department and Seattle city officials, including Mayor Bruce Harrell and Police Chief Shon Barnes, recognized the department's sustained compliance and transformation into a more transparent and accountable agency. Over the years, the city invested more than $127 million in reforms that have enhanced public safety and community trust. While acknowledging the significant progress made, officials emphasized that ongoing reform and community engagement remain priorities for SPD. The termination of federal oversight returns full control of the police department to Seattle, marking a milestone in local law enforcement accountability.
