He also circulated a digitally altered video mocking Jeffries and attributing fabricated remarks to Schumer, which Jeffries denounced as a “racist and fake AI video.” Democrats said the hats “randomly appeared” and were not accepted, while the White House and Republican allies accused Democrats of demanding a large spending “wish list,” including health care for undocumented immigrants. The posts and taunting came hours before the federal government partially shut down on Oct. 1 after Democrats voted down a short-term funding bill. Vice President J.D. Vance had warned the shutdown was likely after the meeting.
