Canada Secures $4.2 Billion Arctic Radar Deal with Australia
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a partnership with Australia to acquire a $4.2 billion Over-the-Horizon Radar system, known as Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN), to enhance Arctic security amid rising geopolitical tensions. The deal, revealed during Carney's visit to Iqaluit, aims to bolster Canada's military presence and assert sovereignty in the increasingly contested northern region. The advanced radar technology, capable of detecting threats up to 3,000 kilometers away, will replace the outdated North Warning System. While the acquisition has been positively received by military officials within the North American Aerospace Defense Command, there are uncertainties regarding its political implications in Washington. Carney emphasized the importance of Arctic sovereignty, particularly in light of aggressive U.S. policies under President Trump. This strategic move reflects Canada's shifting defense priorities and aims to secure its northern frontier more effectively.
