B.C. Wineries Launch Sales to Alberta Consumers
British Columbia (B.C.) wineries can now sell directly to consumers in Alberta following the launch of the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis (AGLC) Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) program, which began on January 6, 2025. This new inter-provincial agreement, established after a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in July 2024, allows approved B.C. wineries to ship their products to Alberta while ensuring tax compliance with Alberta regulations. Premier David Eby emphasized that the program supports economic growth and strengthens ties between the provinces, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith highlighted the benefits for consumers who will have access to a wider variety of wines. The initiative is expected to generate significant revenue, with the B.C. wine industry alone contributing approximately $3.75 billion annually to the economy. The program will be evaluated after one year to assess its effectiveness and potential for expansion across Canada.
