Russia Strikes Kyiv Kill 19 Amid US Dipolmacy, Trump Not Surprised
US President Donald Trump expressed that he was unhappy but not surprised by Russia's recent missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, which killed at least 19 people and damaged EU diplomatic offices. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized Trump's concern alongside his recognition of the long-standing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and indicated that the president would make a further statement on the situation. Despite Trump's efforts to broker peace, including a recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, the attacks have dampened hopes for a ceasefire. Leavitt noted that while the attacks were deadly, Ukraine had also inflicted significant damage on Russian oil refineries in recent weeks, suggesting neither side may be ready to end the war. Trump has consistently pushed for direct talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky but acknowledged resistance, particularly from Putin, whom Trump said "simply does not like" Zelensky. The strikes have drawn international condemnation, with the EU and Britain summoning Russian envoys to protest the targeting of civilian and diplomatic sites.
