Brazil to Host BRICS Summit July 6-7 in Rio

Brazil will host the next BRICS summit on July 6-7, 2025, in Rio de Janeiro, focusing on global governance reform and cooperation among Global South nations. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira highlighted that the summit will address key issues such as development and the establishment of an alternative payment system to reduce reliance on the US dollar, amidst threats of tariffs from former President Donald Trump. BRICS, originally founded in 2009, has expanded to include new members like Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE, with Saudi Arabia invited and other countries like Turkey applying for membership. Indonesia has recently joined as a full member, while Nigeria has been designated as a partner country to participate in the summit. The Brazilian government aims to foster collaboration among the 20 participating nations to improve living standards and encourage regional trade. This summit marks a significant step in BRICS's efforts to strengthen its influence as a counterbalance to the G7 countries.
