Wrongly Deported Migrant Abrego Released From Tennessee Jail
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a migrant wrongfully deported to El Salvador despite a 2019 immigration court ruling against his removal due to gang persecution risks, was released from criminal custody in Tennessee and is reuniting with his family in Maryland. His deportation became a symbol of President Donald Trump's tough immigration policies, especially after the administration delayed his return despite acknowledging the deportation was an administrative error and a federal judge's order to facilitate his return. Abrego faces federal charges for transporting migrants living illegally in the U.S., which his lawyers argue are retaliatory for his lawsuit challenging his wrongful deportation. U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes ruled he is neither a flight risk nor a danger and ordered his release with conditions including home detention and electronic monitoring. However, there remains concern that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement may detain and deport him again, with a Maryland judge requiring officials to notify his lawyers before any further removal to allow legal challenges. Abrego had been living in Maryland with his wife and children before his deportation, and his legal team arranged private security for his transport back home.
