Kilmar Abrego Garcia Returned to US Faces Human Trafficking Charges
Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador in March, was flown back to the United States by the Trump administration to face federal charges of human trafficking and smuggling undocumented migrants. The Department of Justice alleges that Abrego Garcia was involved in a large human smuggling ring, including transporting members of the violent MS-13 gang, and claims he poses a danger to the community and a flight risk. Attorney General Pam Bondi publicly condemned him as a smuggler of humans, while his lawyers and family maintain that he fled gang violence in El Salvador and was raising children with disabilities in Maryland before his mistaken deportation. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, who visited Abrego Garcia in El Salvador, criticized the Trump administration for initially ignoring court orders and emphasized that the case centers on constitutional rights and due process. President Trump stated that the Department of Justice independently decided the manner of Abrego Garcia's return and suggested the case should be straightforward. The move to bring Abrego Garcia back to the U.S. and prosecute him may serve as an attempt by the administration to avoid further legal conflict over his wrongful deportation.
