Gov. Stitt Launches Operation SAFE to Clear Tulsa Homeless Encampments

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has launched Operation SAFE (Swift Action for Families Everywhere) to address the issue of homeless encampments on state-owned property in Tulsa. The operation involves the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) issuing warnings to homeless individuals and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) posting notices for encampment occupants to vacate, focusing on areas like underpasses, highways, and state buildings. Stitt criticized Tulsa's local leadership, including Mayor Monroe Nichols, for insufficiently managing the situation, describing Tulsa as turning into a 'disaster' with widespread homelessness and increasing public safety concerns. The governor emphasized that while the state is acting to restore order, long-term responsibility for city property remains with Tulsa's elected officials, warning that further action might be taken if the city fails to maintain safety. Additionally, OHP will refer undocumented immigrants found during the operation to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation proceedings. Efforts also include coordination with agencies to help homeless individuals transition to safer living arrangements.
