MARAD Reflags CMA CGM Phoenix as Largest U.S.-Flagged Containership
The CMA CGM Phoenix has been officially reflagged as the largest U.S.-flagged commercial container ship, marking a significant milestone in advancing America’s maritime strength under President Trump's administration. The Neo-Panamax vessel, measuring approximately 1,079 feet long and 151 feet wide with a capacity of 9,300 TEUs, was previously registered in Singapore and now joins the U.S.-flagged fleet at the Port of Charleston. This move supports the broader goal of tripling CMA CGM’s U.S.-flagged fleet to 30 ships by 2029, backed by a $20 billion investment in U.S. maritime and port infrastructure. The Phoenix will operate on the INDAMEX service connecting the U.S. East Coast with South Asia and will employ a rotating crew of 42 American mariners, also serving as a training platform for future maritime officers. Acting Maritime Administration Administrator Sang Yi emphasized the importance of this addition for jobs, trade, economic strength, and national security, while CMA CGM America’s CEO highlighted the commitment to strengthening U.S. maritime power and competitiveness. The U.S.-flagged fleet currently consists of 189 vessels and plays a crucial role in securing supply chains and supporting national defense.
