FAA Bans Flights to Haiti Amid Violence
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has banned all civilian flights to Haiti for 30 days following multiple incidents of gunfire targeting commercial airlines, including Spirit Airlines and American Airlines. A Spirit Airlines flight was struck by bullets as it approached Port-au-Prince, forcing it to divert to the Dominican Republic, resulting in minor injuries to a flight attendant. American Airlines confirmed that its flight from Haiti was also hit by gunfire, although no injuries occurred. In response to the escalating violence attributed to powerful gangs controlling much of the capital, major airlines including JetBlue have suspended services to Haiti. The situation remains dire, with the U.S. Embassy warning citizens of the unpredictable dangers in the area, as the newly inaugurated Prime Minister faces a significant security challenge. Calls for international action against the armed groups have intensified, with neighboring leaders labeling the attacks as terrorism.
