Sean Sweeney Joins Spurs as Associate Head Coach

Sean Sweeney, formerly the top assistant and defensive coordinator for the Dallas Mavericks, has agreed to become the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs under new head coach Mitch Johnson. Sweeney previously worked with Jason Kidd in Milwaukee and Brooklyn and helped guide the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals. He was a finalist for head coaching jobs with both the Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons before joining a revamped Spurs staff that now also includes former NBA player Corliss Williamson. The hiring reflects a broader shift in Spurs' coaching structure following Gregg Popovich’s health-related absence, as Johnson officially steps into the head coach role. Sweeney is expected to play a key role in developing young Spurs players like Victor Wembanyama and rookie Dylan Harper. The status of other Spurs assistants for the 2025-26 season remains uncertain.
