Israel Strikes Multiple Military Targets in Yemen's Capital Sanaa
Israel conducted airstrikes on Yemen's capital, Sanaa, targeting Houthi-controlled military and energy infrastructure, including power plants, a fuel depot, missile bases, and areas near the presidential palace. These strikes, involving over ten Israeli combat planes flying long-range missions, were in response to recent Houthi missile and drone attacks on Israel, including the first use of cluster munitions by the Iran-backed Houthis against Israel. The Houthi rebels, who have been launching attacks in solidarity with Palestinians during the Gaza war, control large parts of northern Yemen and have also targeted ships in the Red Sea. The Israeli military described the targets as used for military activity by the Houthis, while Houthi sources condemned the attacks as aggression against civilian and service facilities, reporting casualties and fires. The escalation reflects ongoing regional tensions, with Israel aiming to counter the increased threat posed by new Houthi weaponry allegedly supplied by Iran. This marks the first Israeli airstrike on Sanaa since mid-August, emphasizing the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran-backed forces in Yemen.
