UN Reports 150+ Climate Disasters Displacing 800,000 in 2024
The United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has reported that 2024 was the hottest year on record, witnessing over 150 unprecedented climate disasters that displaced more than 800,000 people globally, the highest number since 2008. The report highlights severe consequences of extreme weather events, including devastating heatwaves, floods, and storms, which have led to significant human and economic losses in various regions, including Japan, the United States, and Europe. In response to the escalating climate crisis, WMO officials emphasized the urgent need for global early warning systems, as only half of the countries currently have adequate measures in place. Notable findings from the report include rising ocean temperatures, accelerated sea level rise, and the highest atmospheric CO2 levels in 800,000 years. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated the possibility of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C if leaders act decisively. Experts warn that without swift action to reduce carbon emissions, the frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters are expected to worsen.
