Hungary Blocks Ukraine's EU Accession Negotiations, Demands Minority Protections

Hungary has blocked the commencement of negotiations for Ukraine's accession to the European Union by demanding additional conditions, particularly a plan to protect national minorities. This obstruction was confirmed by Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna during a conference in Munich, where she stated that Hungary's requirements could delay or disrupt the opening of the first negotiation cluster, which focuses on the rule of law and democratic values. The Polish EU presidency had prepared a letter outlining conditions for Ukraine to develop two roadmaps for reforms, which received broad support from other member states. However, Hungary's insistence on extra conditions has stalled progress, especially as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for expedited integration for Ukraine. Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has also emphasized the importance of high-level discussions between Russia and the U.S. for regional stability, criticizing European leaders he sees as 'pro-war'.
