NYC Police Commissioner Says Crime Under Control, Rejects National Guard Aid
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch informed U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi that the NYPD has crime under control and does not require National Guard assistance, citing record-low shooting incidents and victims in 2025. Tisch highlighted the police department's use of advanced drone technology and quality-of-life enforcement teams to maintain public safety during their 30-minute meeting at One Police Plaza. This discussion occurred as President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing the mobilization of specially trained National Guard units across all states to address civil disturbances and rising crime, with Chicago, New York, and Baltimore identified as potential targets for federal intervention. Despite the president's push and prior deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., local officials in New York and Illinois, including Tisch and Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson, have pushed back against additional federal intervention. New York City Mayor Eric Adams supported Tisch’s position, reporting a 5.6 percent drop in overall crime in July and the lowest number of shooting incidents on record. The Trump administration’s initiative reflects a broader strategy focusing on crime in Democratic-led cities, while Republican-led areas have not been targeted for similar federal action.
