Microsoft and Constellation Energy have signed a 20-year deal to reopen the Three Mile Island nuclear plant's Unit 1, now renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center, which was shuttered in 2019. The plant will undergo a $1.6 billion revitalization and is expected to be operational by 2028, pending regulatory approval. Microsoft will purchase the plant's entire energy output to power its data centers, supporting its AI ambitions and its goal to become carbon negative. The deal underscores the growing demand for carbon-free and reliable energy sources to meet the tech industry's power needs. The project is also expected to create 3,400 jobs and significantly contribute to Pennsylvania's GDP. Unit 2, which partially melted down in 1979, will not be restarted and is undergoing decommissioning.
