The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has commenced the rollout of its new delivery vehicles, with the first units arriving in Athens, Georgia, in late summer 2024. These Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs), built by Oshkosh Defense, are designed for comfort and safety, featuring air conditioning, 360-degree cameras, and blind spot monitoring, contrasting sharply with the outdated Grumman Long Life Vehicles from the 1980s that are prone to breakdowns and fires. USPS plans to deploy around 60,000 of these new trucks, most of which will be electric, as part of a $40 billion transformation plan led by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. The older vehicles have been criticized for their inefficiency and poor conditions, prompting the need for this upgrade. The initiative is supported by a $3 billion deal with the Biden administration aimed at enhancing the postal network, including the installation of charging stations for electric trucks.
