Russia Launches Large-Scale Drone, Missile Attacks Across Ukraine Killing Over 20
Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine involving nearly 600 drones and over 30 missiles, targeting cities including Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia, resulting in significant civilian casualties and widespread damage to residential buildings and EU and British government facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks as evidence of Moscow's disinterest in peace, accusing Russia of exploiting diplomatic efforts for military aggression and targeting those longing for peace, including global actors such as President Donald Trump. The airstrikes, the heaviest in over three years, killed more than 20 people in Kyiv alone and injured dozens more, with many trapped in rubble. International leaders including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen strongly condemned the strikes, accusing Putin of sabotaging peace hopes and threatening further sanctions. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire, emphasizing the unacceptable nature of attacks on civilians. While President Trump expressed sadness over the escalation and commitment to ending the war, his administration noted that both sides must be willing to pursue peace for diplomatic efforts to succeed.
