Singapore Seeks Deeper Ties with China, US, Europe amid Global Shift
Singapore's Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam emphasized the need for small countries like Singapore to deepen relationships with major powers such as China, the United States, and Europe amid a shifting multipolar world order where U.S. dominance is waning. The country, highly reliant on external trade which is several times its GDP, is significantly impacted by U.S. trade policies, including the tariffs announced by President Donald Trump affecting multiple nations. While Singapore was spared in the latest tariff round, previous tariffs have already pressured its economy, leading to a downgraded GDP growth forecast for 2025. Despite these challenges, the U.S.-Singapore trade relationship remains substantial, with the U.S. holding a growing trade surplus with Singapore. Additionally, Singapore is advancing regional cooperation with Malaysia through innovative projects like a large indoor vertical farm, reflecting cross-border efforts to bolster food security and resilience. Strategically, Singapore must carefully balance ties with both superpowers and maintain good relations with neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, given the complex geopolitical and demographic landscape.
