UK considers deploying Typhoon jets to Ukraine for peacekeeping

The UK government is exploring the possibility of deploying Typhoon fighter jets to Ukraine as part of a security guarantee for a potential ceasefire, rather than sending large numbers of ground troops. Discussions among British ministers have suggested an 'air policing' mission, which would involve stationing fighter jets in Poland to respond quickly to any Russian attacks. This option is considered more feasible than a no-fly zone and could complement a smaller peacekeeping force on the ground from the UK and other European nations. However, Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, rejected the idea of NATO troops in Ukraine as 'unacceptable', casting doubt on the viability of such peacekeeping arrangements. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that a substantial number of foreign troops, potentially up to 200,000, would be needed to secure peace after hostilities cease. As talks continue between the US and Russia, the UK maintains that any peace settlement must include a US role for deterrence against future aggression.
