WWII Bomb Disrupts Eurostar, Paris Travel
A 500-kilogram World War II bomb was found near Paris' Gare du Nord station, causing significant disruptions in rail services, including the cancellation of all Eurostar trains to London and Brussels. The bomb, discovered 2.5 km from the station, led to a suspension of international and local train services, affecting thousands of passengers and causing financial losses due to canceled travel plans. Authorities established a 1 km security perimeter, but no residential evacuations were necessary. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot assured the public that there was no imminent danger as bomb disposal experts worked to defuse the device. The incident also affected the A1 highway and parts of Paris' ring road, further complicating travel. The discovery highlights ongoing challenges with unexploded ordnance from past wars across Europe, which continue to disrupt daily life.
