Social Security Implements Stricter Verification, Withholds Full Overpayments in May 2025

Starting in May 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will require in-person identity verification for applicants unable to use online accounts and for beneficiaries changing direct deposit details offline, aiming to reduce fraud and speed up processing to one business day. Social Security payments are distributed monthly based on birthdates, with exceptions for those receiving benefits since before 1997 or who also receive Supplemental Security Income, which has a different schedule. Despite its importance in reducing senior poverty, Social Security faces a significant financial shortfall, with the Trust Fund projected to be depleted by 2034, potentially leading to a 21% cut in benefits unless reforms are enacted. Various proposals, including those associated with former President Trump, aim to strengthen the program or reduce taxes on benefits, but comprehensive solutions are hindered by political gridlock. Approximately 40% of beneficiaries currently pay federal income taxes on their Social Security benefits, but new legislative efforts may offer some tax relief.
