A recent Lifeway Research survey indicates a significant increase in the number of Protestant pastors unwilling to disclose their voting preferences for the 2024 election, with 23% refusing to answer, compared to just 4% in 2020 and 3% in 2016. Among those who did share, 50% plan to vote for former President Donald Trump, while 24% support Vice President Kamala Harris, with 23% undecided. This reluctance highlights the growing sensitivity and divisiveness of political discourse within churches, according to Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research. In terms of political affiliation, 50% of pastors identify as Republicans, while a smaller portion identifies as Democrats or Independents. Meanwhile, a separate poll shows that over 70% of LGBTQ voters favor Harris, compared to only 8% for Trump. This illustrates the stark contrast in support among different demographic groups as the election approaches.
