Gaza Reconstruction Efforts Require $53 Billion, Egypt Advocates

Egyptian officials are actively developing a comprehensive reconstruction plan for the Gaza Strip that aims to avoid the displacement of its Palestinian population, in direct response to proposals for their removal. During a recent conference, Minister Rania al-Mashat emphasized the need for a fully integrated vision that ensures the Palestinian people remain on their land, while President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called on the international community for coherent support in rebuilding Gaza. A joint report by the World Bank, UN, and EU estimates that over $53 billion will be needed for recovery, with approximately $20 billion required in the first three years alone. This assessment points to extensive damage across various sectors, including housing and healthcare, with nearly 70% of buildings affected. The Egyptian plan includes creating 'secure areas' for temporary housing during reconstruction, while also aiming to establish a Palestinian administration independent of existing authorities to oversee the efforts. Collaboration with international partners is key to funding and implementing the plan, which seeks to provide job opportunities and support for Gaza's residents.
