Chicago Judge Grants Bond to Immigrant Falsely Accused of Threatening Trump
Ramon Morales Reyes, a Mexican immigrant falsely accused of threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump, has been granted bond by a Chicago immigration judge, who ruled he does not pose a danger to the community. The accusations stemmed from a letter threatening Trump, initially attributed to Morales Reyes by the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary Kristi Noem, but Wisconsin authorities later determined the letter was forged by Demetric D. Scott, who aimed to implicate Morales Reyes and avoid prosecution in his own criminal case. Morales Reyes, who does not speak or write English well, was arrested and detained despite not being charged with any crimes related to the threats, and he is currently facing deportation proceedings. Scott admitted to writing the letter and is facing charges of armed robbery and aggravated battery for an attack on Morales Reyes. Morales Reyes’s bond was set at $7,500, and he could be released if the government does not appeal. The Department of Homeland Security maintains it will continue to seek the deportation of Morales Reyes, citing his immigration status and prior arrests, despite acknowledging he is no longer under investigation for threats against the president.
